Mont Blanc, the only major summit among the world’s highest lacking real protection, is extremely vulnerable and in peril.

Since 2002 Pro Mont Blanc has been working towards gaining the UNESCO classification “World Heritage Site” for the massif.

As well as the prestige deriving from the UNESCO classification it also provides an important international and active instrument for future protection of the massif. It is also the only way of making the three nation states face up to their responsibilities. Classification as a World Heritage Site means that a severe management plan has to be implemented using expert advice and international controls.

Classification for Mont Blanc will be the first step in controlling its own future and obtaining protection for the area from new threats including climate change.
